DCIS 011

Computer Concepts
Students are introduced to the fundamentals of personal computers, concepts and terminology. Topics presented are hardware components, Internet search techniques, security, ethics and current technology developments. Fundamentals of current software applications are presented in operating system file management, word processing, spreadsheet and presentation programs. Includes hands-on, practical in-class activities and extended assignments. Designed for those with little or no computer experience. This course serves as a foundation for CIS 111.*

CIS 111 (3 credits) - Introduction to Computer Applications

DENG 020

Basic Writing I
Intensive review of grammar, usage, and sentence/paragraph construction. For T-STEP students whose test scores and/or writing performance indicate the need for improvement in basic composition skills. Should be taken before DENG 021: Basic Writing II.*

DENG 021

Basic Writing II
Continuation of intensive review of grammar, usage, and sentence/paragraph construction. For T-STEP students who have successfully completed DENG 020: Basic Writing I. Must be taken before ENG 106: Composition I.*

DENG 025

Basic Reading I
Development and improvement of reading skills. For TSTEP students whose reading test scores indicate the need for improvement in basic reading skills and strategies. (Semester 1 of a two-semester developmental course.)*

DENG 026

Basic Reading II
Continuation of development and improvement of reading skills. For TSTEP students who have satisfactorily completed DENG 025: Basic Reading I. (Continuation of DENG 025; Semester 2 of 2)*

DMAT 020

Basic Mathematics I
This course covers whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. The emphasis is on understanding the meaning of numbers and developing an ability to estimate answers. Working with rulers and linear measurement will be included.*

DMAT 021

Basic Mathematics II
This course consists of topics from beginning algebra and practical geometry. Computation of fractions and decimals is reviewed with and without a calculator. Practical problems involving measurement and percentage are emphasized.*

SOC 001 (3 credits)

Professional Development Skills
Available only to students enrolled in TSTEP, the course covers topics essential to survive in today’s work force: employment search and application techniques, résumé development, acceptable behavior, job knowledge and expectations, and professional telephone speaking skills.*

SOC 010

Success Strategies
Encourages students to live healthy life-styles, develop academic skills, foster habits of punctuality, and maintain good attendance records in all classes. Time management, positive attitude, and goal orientation are also covered.*

SOC 011

Academic Applications
This course is designed on the premise that students must first have a sincere desire for an education before the process of academic and social development can begin. It is meant to enhance the student’s opportunity to achieve success in college.*

SOC 108 (3 credits)

Employment Dynamics Seminar
Available only to students enrolled in TSTEP, this course introduces students to discussions on sexual harassment, employment expectations, social and work related issues, and recent changes in the work place, including diversity issues, discrimination lawsuits, civil rights, legal outcomes, and group vs. individual dynamics.*
