News from Cabinetmaking at Stevens
Freshman Cabinetmaking instructor, Steve Latta, working in conjuction with Lie-Nielsen Toolworks Ltd. based out of Warren, Maine, has developed and brought to market a set of specialized hand tools for executing traditional inlay techniques. The joint venture began in early 2006 with the final tool set, after a slew of prototypes, hitting the national market this past December. Lie-Nielsen Tools was founded by Tom Lie-Nielsen in the early 80's and has since turned into a multi-million dollar venture exporting upscale, woodworking tools around the world. Although the company offers tools made by other manufacturers, all products bearing the company name are made in the United States either at the main facility in Maine or through other U.S. subcontractors. The set will be distributed directly by Lie-Nielsen as well as other companies such as Woodcraft Supply, Highland Hardware, etc.
Latta and Lie-Nielsen are also developing a line of instructional DVD's dealing with traditional woodworking techniques. The first in the series, Fundamentals of Inlay: Line & Berry, is currently available. The nearly 3 hour video provides an overview of basic inlay techniques. Future videos will cover Advanced Inlay Techniques, Ornamental Veneer Work, Working With Hide Glue, etc.
