Developmental Programs
Summer Program
The Stevens Summer Program is a six-week semester held in late June through early August. This program, mostly for academically underprepared students, provides the opportunity to receive instruction in both credit and remedial courses. Courses include English, reading, mathematics, social science, and study skills. Instruction in these areas prepares students for entrance into full-time programs at Stevens. In addition to general education courses, summer students also participate in personal and academic counseling sessions. At the conclusion of the summer semester, participants are evaluated for academic and personal progress. Those who successfully complete the summer program are recommended for full-time enrollment for the fall semester.
TSTEP (Thaddeus Stevens Technical Enrichment Program)
Program Director: Nilda Roman
This program is designed to meet the needs of academically at risk students. The program aims to enhance and improve the studnet's performance in a holistic and structured fashion. The developmental core courses, social and educational activities, personal development, individual counseling, employment skills and formal monthly program meetings are an essential and practical program portion that assures achievement and success for the participant.
Program Academic Curriculum:
This one-year program encompasses an academic curriculum that includes
developmental courses in Math, Writing, and Technical Reading. Students are
scheduled for a course in Success Strategies, Comuters and Work Place Skills.
Program Design:
All TSTEP students are exposed to a two-week group rotation assignment in each of
the technical shops. This exposure grants each student an opportunity to experience
personal and hands-on knowledge of our technical majors. The shop rotation
endorses students to make a conscientious and individual shop choice for their
major of concentration. The students have one year to prepare themselves
academically and socially to qualify into the majors of their choice. Each student is
expected to complete 10 community service projects per semester with the approval
of the program director. Students meet weekly for personal individual meetings with
the program director for counseling. These individual weekly visits allow students to
address any personal concerns, academic and social difficulties encountered while
attending Thaddeus Stevens College. Issues and accomplishments discussed during
the counseling meetings are recorded by the students and placed in their personal
file as a point of reference and for follow up purposes until they complete the
program.
Program Goals and Objectives:
The program's main goal and objective is to prepare and enhance the student's
academic, social and work skills abilities. Upon completion of the one-year
participation, students will have acquired a greater knowledge and reference for
personal accountability, enhancement of academic performances, qualification into
the program of their choice, development or refinement of acceptable social skills,
professional work ethics, and discipline and appreciation for diversity. The TSTEP
model approach reflects techniques and clinical setting practices that are vital for
group, individual structure and personal development.
TSTEP Admission Criteria/Process:
The Admission and TSTEP Directors review applications of students who have been
placed into remedial courses upon completion of the educational assessment.
The student's grades, High School attendance record, and program goals are all
considered before acceptance into TSTEP is determined.
After both Directors render a decision, an admission into TSTEP acceptance letter
is sent to the applicant from the admission's office.
